The Asociación de Charros de San Antonio has been carrying on the tradition of Charrera for years. Charrera originated in the 19th century as a way for the landed gentry to prepare horses and riders for war. It later evolved into an equestrian competition featuring horse reining, bull riding and artistic roping skills. Today’s charros wear the traditional clothes and use horse equipment as required by the Federation of Charros in Mexico.
Fiesta San Antonio started in 1891 as a one-parade event to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. That historic commemoration still takes place, but for more than a century, Fiesta has grown into a celebration of San Antonio’s rich and diverse cultures. Fiesta has evolved into one of this nation’s premier festivals with an economic impact of more than $340 million for the Alamo City. Funds raised by official Fiesta events provide services to San Antonio citizens throughout the year.
Take a step back in history to the old Mexican towns who were home to San Antonio’s founders and cultural influences. Admission to A Day in Old Mexico and Charreada is $20 for adults, $15 for military and seniors, and $5 for children aged 6-12.
